The householder yogi
A government accountant in Varanasi with a wife, children, and a salary — Shyama Charan Lahiri looked exactly like anyone else, which was his teaching. Initiated into Kriya Yoga in the Himalayas, he returned to his desk and his family and attained the heights of realization without leaving either.
He kept his inner life so hidden that neighbors of decades never suspected it, initiating sincere seekers of every caste and religion quietly at his home. Through his lineage — carried to the West by Paramahansa Yogananda's Autobiography of a Yogi — his influence became global while his life remained a closed ledger of humility.
His technique, Kriya Yoga, is transmitted by initiation and is not detailed here — but his message needs no initiation: the householder's life is no obstacle to the highest realization. Do your duties, keep your practice hidden and constant, and let the world see nothing but your kindness.
